The Church of Imamculate Mary, dedicated to the Assumption, is the oldest historical monument in the city of Galati, built in the XVII-th century. The church fulfilled a double function: place of worship and fortress against invaders.

The Church of Immaculate Mary is located in downtown Galati.

The Church of Immaculate Mary has a bell tower included in the body of the church and a fortified bridge, giving it a second function: a refuge and defense location.

In the raising of the Church existing materials were used:  wood from the forests in Covurlui Plains, brick and lime, sand from Danube’s beaches, etc. Massive stone and brick from the Roman site from Tirighina - Barbosi was also used.

It is said that there is a secret tunnel under the Danube, leading from the The Church of Immaculate Mary to the other side of the river, used in order to hide assets and to escape the enemy’s attacks.
