YW-Youth Peace Ambassadors – Combating Hate Online & Offline

"Youth Peace Ambassadors – Combating Hate online & Offline" is a two phase project taking place in Oslo, Norway December 2015, and in Cagliari, Italy in April, 2016 that is an outcome of a long-term cooperation of the partner organizations on the topic of Hate Speech on-line. The main aim of this training course is to combat online discrimination, such as hate speech, bouling in Europe, especially in on-line environment and provide youth leaders and youth workers with the competences to interpret and understand hate speech as a form of violence and to work systematically in their communities especially with young people to fight against, prevent and oppose hate speech and its impacts on society. During two training courses the strategies for youth workers and young leaders will be developed that will support them in implementing actions and activities in combating hate and violence in all their forms. The training course is a follow-up of a previous activity implemented by the partners, the training course called Hate Speech Where Were You during which it was proved that the topic is highly relevant to young people livinig in Europe and that it is necessary to provide the youth leaders and youth workers with complex competences to work efficiently in their communities. We also react on the long-term dangerous trends and recent events happening in Europe such as raise of xenophobia, islamophobia, hate and intolerance based on ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and other types of radicalism. The social networks but often also mainstream media provide unlimited space for those expressions of hate to be performed and spread and young people become extremely vulnerable to their influence. The participants of the project will be 25 youth workers and youth leaders with an experience of working with youngsters, especially those from vulnerable communities that might become victims of hate speech. They acquire such competencies that will empower them to understand the context of hate speech as a form of violence and practical skills to combat it, such as non-violent communication, non-violent action, crisis communication, mediation and specific approaches to youth involvement. One of the objectives of will be also to develop sense of responsibility to become an active witness, as a part of European citizenship. The participants will receive intense mentoring during all the phases, in order to ensure the quality of the dissemination of the project results and also during the following phase after the training courses. The project "Youth Peace Ambassadors – Combating Hate online & Offline" will be implemented as a part of the Europe wide campaign No Hate Speech Movement supported by the Council of Europe that is a campaign against the expressions of hate speech online in all its forms, including those that most affect young people. Activities of the training course will include No Hate Speech Movement session, and they will be strongly based on the methods of non-formal education, self-assessment, development of the competences with a regard to individual needs and learning styles of the participants. Plenary inputs, theories, small and large group work, self-directed learning, online research, presentations, intercultural exchanges, group building, self-assessment, sharing, experiential learning and self-reflection will be used during the training course. The project raises awareness, uses advocacy and seeks for creative solutions. First of all it equips young people and youth organizations with the competences necessary to recognize and act against such human rights violations.
