YW-ROMA: One Nation - Many Lives

The Training Course “ROMA: One Nation - Many Lives" was a 8 days project that took place in Moldova between 16th to 24th October 2015.. This project was as a starting point for putting the situation of Roma in Central and Eastern Europe in the center of attention of the current issue of the Thematic Series. The TC was an initiative adopted by different European and partner countries that sizable Roma minorities. The “ROMA: One Nation - Many Lives" was the joint effort aiming at changing the lives of Roma in Europe, which serves as an action framework for NGO's and will monitor progress in accelerating social inclusion and improving the socio-economic status of Roma across Europe. Within the framework of the TC development four priority areas have been defined: education, employment, health and housing and the participating countries had to develop National Action Plans indicating goals to be achieved for the areas mentioned above. With a help of this project, participants came up with solutions and measures, including positive action and best practices to improve the situation of Roma and their social inclusion, to discover and explore the tool of photography for promotion ethnic values and differences in a more professional and positive way and as a result – to engage more active young people in their culture and bring attention of a wider public to the social issues of Roma people exclusion of their local communities and countries. The project focused on these age-old prejudices with 3 different mini-exhibitions in themes - ‘We are Roma, We are Diverse’, ‘Multiple identities and more than stereotypes’ and ‘Many Lives, Many Hopes’ featuring personal insights into the daily lives of Roma Community. Training Course “ROMA: One Nation - Many Lives'', used photography to promote social integration of Roma in each participating country. One of the messages from this session was to raise awareness for effective inter cultural learning and a need to create space of equality first. The idea for an effective intercultural outcome to combine with some other types - Human Rights, Citizenship, Anti-racism, Conflict transformation, etc. It is not only about changing perception of reality; it is also about changing reality itself. Photos were posted online to bring cross-border and cross-cultural understanding of some of the most intractable challenges faced by our global society. Non-formal education methods were used, learning by doing experiences, and best practices sharing. The narrative style of this project was designed in order to give a voice to the subjects, enabling them to take ownership of their photos and providing them with platforms to share their successes and challenges they face with a global audience with a view to promoting intercultural dialogue and positive social change. The project focused on the issues of promoting work of social organizations using new, innovative tools and strategies in photo making. The participants spent 8 days learning from experienced trainers and sharing their own experience in order to create a visible outcome of their work the end of the project. They took part in workshops about acting, exhibitions and photography. A big part of the TC was dedicated to learning practical skills in photography, such as cropping, use of aperture, white balance etc. as well as basics skills in graphics editing programs. The participants learned also how to create and plan social campaigns using all of those tools. All of the activities were held in a form of workshops, games, open space dynamics, photo making etc. The main activities: - Information about Roma’s history and culture. Discovering Youth situation in Roma population through historical heritage of old generation. Practical exercises, conducted both in a classroom and in the field and discussions of specific considerations regarding the coverage of under-reported peoples and cultures. - Positive image (stereotype breaking workshop) The game presented that people with different images and life circumstances can act differently because of a number of reasons. - Photoshooting and photography workshops. The youth workers developed strong competencies in tolerance promotion and giving a voice to the subject. The project brought impact on participants on the following: - Participants broke up all prejudices and stereotypes concerning Roma people; - they understood the nature of cultural misunderstanding; - the youth workers promoted tolerance into the society; - they shared knowledge and skills in the field of conducting negotiations in different cultural environments; - they developed both theoretical and practical skills (i.e. public speaking, conducting a successful mediation, - negotiating in extreme conditions); - they realized and shared videos during the project about Roma people in social networks, blogs etc.;
