Young People in the Media

Background According to research, 86% of young people connect social media at least once a day, while 72% connect several times each day. One out of every three young people spends at least three hours in social media. The ratio is higher especially in the 15-17 age group, singles and secondary school students. Another point in the research results is that 13% of the young people who participated in the research spend six hours or more in social media. Research shows that young people who spend most of their day in internet media are faced with social isolation. Cognitive and emotional worlds of young people, who are exposed to harmful content such as sexuality and violence on the Internet in an increased dose, are exposed to significant degradation Project Objectives: Our Project aims to increase printed and visual media habits of the young people; protect them from the harmful content in the popular media; make them have new attitudes in following the media. The number and Profile of the participants 15+15 girls and boys between 13-30 age group from both Turkey and Spain will participate in our project. The participants will be selected among the young people who are exposed to the harmful content of social media. The young people who isolate themselves from the community, leave socio cultural activities aside and have non-compliance with their family members are at the risk exactly. Activities Press meeting, country presentations, reviewing the Project application form, forming the activity groups, sharing the duties, expectation surveys. Media literacy education will be given to participants (searching, choosing the best source, examining, analyzing, commenting, criticizing, resulting and outlining etc. Examining some newspapers, checking the content of news, actuality, sports, arts, economy and politics pages, discussing and commenting. Music Program and entertainment. Reading an art, literature and history periodical, commenting and discussing. Football tournament, Writing one current article, a football match commendations for each participant, reading them to the others and discussing. Volleyball tournament. Recording and Interviewing techniques trainings for the participants. Preparing a symbolic news program, sports program and panel discussion in each group. Practicing on computers and making recordings. Visiting Journalism branch of Seyhan ÇPL school, Adana Journalists Community, Governorship of Adana Press and Information Directorate, Adana Çukurova TV Channel and Akdeniz TV, doing observations there and researching. Doing interviews in the public and preparing a news program with these interviews. Practicing on computers and prepare DVD recordings of these programs Methodology All activities are planned with a focus on the participants. Project management will be created entirely from participants and will be given an active role in the management. In order to allow participants fully participate in the activities, groups will be formed and given determined roles to each participant. Groups of participants will be selected with gender equality from both countries to enhance cross-cultural integration. Participants will be given preparatory training for each Results and Expected Impact Searching media sources, source selection, content selection, review, analysis, interpretation, critical thinking, judgment skills of the participants were increased. Writing article, column and commendation to other articles competences has been improved. Interviewing, taking photo and video capturing qualifications of the participants were developed. Managerial skills of the participants were increased. Linguistic and cultural competence of the participants were developed. Elimination of prejudice among participants was provided. Long Term Benefits Our project will contribute to the development of EU youth support systems, contribute to increase the capacity of cooperation between the European Union institutions, increase the visibility of Turkish National Agency and recognition of Youth programs, eliminate the prejudices, promotion of intercultural integration at all levels.
