The project takes place within the Youth and Culture House in Flers (MJC), a non-profit and non gouvernemental organization. The MJC offers a wide panel of artistic and cultural activities for everyone (arts, wellness activities, dance, fitness, music, theater etc.) and gives the possibility to the youth to discover and to open up through collective projects. We support young people in their initiatives and help them to develop their ideas and their local or international projects. In this context since 15 years we welcome european volunteers every year. Our volunteers have 2 main missions: - Make sensitive the young people in the local area to the european citizenship and mobility, and - Make their culture known to the inhabitants by taking part in local events or by proposing projects promoting exchanges and discovery. To inform young people can have various forms : participation in forum, intervention in schools, creation of communications tools, creation of exhibition... We consider the volunteers as ambassadors of Europe and it is for us important that they share their experience with their peers. They usually do it with great enthusiasm. So they learn to speak in public in a foreign language, English or French, to present the EVS possibility and to motivate other young people to go and discover Europe. Regarding the development of cultural projects: Upon their arrival, the volunteers have as 1st mission to create an exhibition to present themselves and their culture. So at the beginning we train them to build a cultural project, and support them in the following projects. It can take differents forms, according to their profile and to their centers of interest: intercultural evening, culinary workshop, organization of concert, video creation etc.... They also learn to set up a project from A to Z, develop their skills, open up themselves, and share their culture to the inhabitants of Flers and surroundings. In our organization we develop more and more cultural projects in partnership with other institutions in the city. The volunteers benefit from those links and play a role within the media library, youth centers, associations of current musics, modern art etc.... So they can open their mind and meet new people acting in different fields. We welcome 2 volunteers from early October to late September. We have no typical profile: motivation to learn and proposal of activities are important for us. We favor young people who had less opportunity to travel and who need to develop their skills in foreign languages. The working team and the volunteers in the Board of the MJC take care to the european volunteers. The youth coordinator takes time to guide them in administrative tasks and in project building. Thanks to regular meetings, the EVS projects will be adapted and promoted. By volunteering in our organization, young people develop their knowledge on European Union, on different political systems and different societies that are making Europe. They build critical thinking and strengthen their habilities in being involved in the civil society. By meeting new people they can know themselves even more : they more precisely define their professionnal and personal life project. For us it is rewarding to see them changing in their thinking. At local level volunteers animate and arouse Flers to Europe : they permit to develop new partnerships and make people aware of the interest of hosting young people as volunteer in organizations. Sometimes people living in Flers and surroundings discover our organization thanks our european volunteers ! At international level we are in contact with new european organizations thanks evs project and they can become good partners for future youth exchanges or sending evs.
