Women and Girls in Sports News and Media
Start date: Jan 1, 2017, End date: Dec 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Women and Girls in Sports News and Media (NeWMAGS) project is the first of its kind to take a Europe-wide approach to tackling gender stereotyping in the media coverage of sport, by delivering actions to increase the quality and quantity of media coverage of women's sport at a national and EU level. In doing so, it addresses the Erasmus+ Sport objective of promoting and encouraging equal opportunities in sport, in particular in relation to gender equality, and will promote the implementation of recommendations set out in the 'Gender Equality in Sport' EU Group of Expert's "Proposal for Strategic Actions 2014-2020".In the EU, men exercise, play sport or engage in other physical activity more than women. The lack of visibility of women's sport and female sporting role models in the media, and the negative gender stereotypes that exist in sport, are recognised as contributing factors. The NeWMAGS project will address this issue by drawing on learnings and an approach from a partner that has carried out significant work in this area in the UK, and intends to replicate and adapt this approach through collaboration with project partners from across Europe. The project will involve the exploration, in a number of different national contexts, of not just the amount of media coverage that is afforded to men's and women's sport, but also the quality and content of media project. The findings will be used to deliver outputs, including a toolkit, national info-sessions and a conference, to provide concrete, workable solutions which, through their implementation, will encourage better practice and emphasise the need for governments, media, sport and the commercial sector to work together to drive change. As a result of the project, participating organisations in the partner countries and across the EU will have greater knowledge and capacity to make changes to their policy, practice, processes and training to encourage gender equality in sports media coverage.
