The project entitled Winter Navigation Motorways of the Sea (WINMOS) aims at improving efficiency, safety and environmental per-formance of winter navigation in the Baltic Sea. It aims to meet current and future challenges by ensuring appropriate icebreaking resources for the Baltic Sea region and developing cooperative actions to improve the functionality of the winter navigation system in order to meet the challenges of today and in the future.WINMOS comprises seven different sub-projects:• Investigation of the next generation of icebreakers and future needs for icebreaking resources.• Lifetime extension of a number of older icebreakers.• Development of fuel injection technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.• Further development of management systems for winter navigation and icebreaking.• Development of simulator training for officers.• Construction of a Finnish icebreaker. Achievements: State of project on 31 December 2013:The project is slightly delayed in terms of Development of the Icebreaking Management Network, Human element and training (both due to later start) and Acquisition of a new icebreaker (due to procurement issues) but the whole Action should be completed timely and in its entirety.
