Objectif général :Le projet WATER a pour but de protéger les rivières et la biodiversité par la restauration des zones humides. En effet, la qualité de leau ainsi que sa quantité dans les cours deau se sont détériorées dans un passé récent suite à la dégradation des zones humides qui jouent un rôle de filtre naturel pour leau depuis lintérieur des terres. Une mauvaise qualité de leau ainsi quune quantité insuffisante deau dans les bassins versants ont des conséquences sociales, économiques et environnementales sur tous les territoires de la Manche : augmentation des sécheresses et inondations ; perte de biodiversité et perturbations du fonctionnement des écosystèmes ; accroissement de la quantité deau douce entrainant la détérioration décosystèmes aquatiques par la prolifération de certains végétaux ; réduction dans la capacité des bassins versants à sadapter aux effets des changements climatiques. Toutes ces problématiques demandent une gestion intégrée de la ressource en eau.Principales actions :- Identification de la répartition actuelle des zones humides et reconstitution dune carte de leur répartition dans le passé.- Restauration et gestion des anciennes zones humides en travaillant avec les propriétaires des terrains.- Evaluation du rapport coûts/avantages de la restauration des zones humides.- Diffusion et communication de linformation par le partenariat de la zone Manche.----------------Main objective :The WATER project aims to preserve rivers and biodiversity via the restoration of wetlands. Indeed, water quality and quantity of the rivers have weakened over recent history due to the deterioration of the wetlands, which buffer the water coming from the land. Poor water quality (and quantity) in river catchments have many important social, economic and environmental implications in the Channel area: increased droughts and floods; reduced biodiversity and ecosystem function; increased freshwater and marine eutrophication; and reductions in the river catchments ability to cope withthe effects of climate change. These issues require channel wide cooperation through integrated water resource management.Main actions :- Assessment of current wetland distribution and modelling of former wetland distribution- Restoration and management of former wetlands by working with landowners- Evaluation of the economics of wetland restoration-Dissemination and knowledge transfer of the project findings via the cross-border partnership. Achievements: The bilingual book History of European cooperation around wetted-lands was created by ten partners involved in the WATER project to highlight the environmental benefits of the wetlands that the partnership studied and restored together, in Brittany and in Southern England. Marshes, ponds, lakes, rivers and estuaries play a significant role in preserving the quality of water and biodiversity, but also in preventing floods. The book has been prepared over the past two years, and written by French and English experts, coordinated by two French partners in Brittany, proofread and translated by the English lead partner of WATER, and match-funded by the whole partnership and by ERDF. Over 1,000 copies of the book were printed and circulated to French and English stakeholders involved in managing wetlands at the local, regional and national levels. This crossborder story is full of pictures and testimonies. Not to be missed!
