Water- formula, life, poesy
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project is based on teaching methods and experience exchange between European countries’ secondary schools. Teachers will learn how to enhance the students’ interest in Natural Sciences (which are often considered too complex by student body), and how to inspire them to be more proactive in learning process, and promote understanding the importance of school education in their future life by setting a good example of interdisciplinary approach to research and learning processes of real life complex issues. The teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geography will cooperate between themselves and also involve teachers of Arts, Literature and Sports to promote, help and inspire 14-18 year old pupils to work in pairs and groups to explore the topic or “Water – formula, life, poesy”. This topic allows broad range of researches, connects well with climate change and most importantly, lets pupils easily see the importance of the many Natural Science subjects for understanding their everyday life, such as, how much water they use daily, and how much water is used for the products that they use daily, should we be afraid of lack of drinking water, and what happens with the pollution that is let into water. The big 2 year project has 8 subtopics. (1) What is water? Physical properties of water. (2) Chemical properties of water. (3) Drinking water. (4) Water in production of food and goods (also services). (5) Pollution in water (6) Water, temperature and climate change. (7) Amazing water miracles and terrifying force of storms. (8) Water in religion, folklore, literature and sacred and healing water. These subtopics allow for broad guidance throughout the project and for developing different means of outputs by students, such as presentations, videos, photography, drawings, experiments, student run activities, etc. Participating schools from Latvia, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Spain, and Turkey have different backgrounds and fields of expertise, as well as different social and economic situations not only in the countries but also within the student body, giving great variety of teaching methods in place to be explored, applied, improved, and shared. Every 2-3 months of the project there is a new topic to be explored within each of the schools, presented to the local student body, evaluated, and brought to the one of the hosting countries (different for the each topic meeting) to show the learning results. The students will live in the family, to be able to grasp the culture and the lifestyle of the hosting country for the 5 days of the mobility exchange. Whereas teachers will have the time to learn new material, new methods, new expertise in the time since the full classrooms during the rest of the year rather limits the innovative approaches to be considered, tried out and implemented in the curriculum.Up to date materials and teaching methods will allow all the student body be more motivated during their school years for exploration, proactive learning and constructive feedback on the learning materials. The two way bond between the students and teachers can be built in such mobilities, encouraging children to be more open to teachers about their wishes and concerns in their daily school lives. Teachers will be the multipliers of the positive effect of the project, since their lessons learned will be used years and years after the project has taken place. The motivation to understand our relative level of education in home institutions in regards to international environment creates incentive to compete with the rest of the Europe, raise the level of the students knowledge bar and work for the continuous improvement of education framework in home institution. The output of the project is also an important source of inspiration for the remaining age groups of the pupils.Since around 20 motivated students are expected to come up with a good quality project every 2-3 months in each of the schools, around 1600 students and more are expected to take part directly in the projects, whereas the content through presentations, exhibitions in schools, posting in Internet platforms and homepages and sharing to other schools is expected to reach a considerable amount of pupils during this time and after the project. This project gives not only teachers a chance to improve the educational framework, interest their students in their subjects more by looking at complex interdisciplinary topics, in this case Water, but also gives students a better grasp on their level and competitiveness in international arena.Students with light disabilities, emigrants, wide social and economic background students will raise awareness of EU countries, motivate students to learn English and search non-native language materials to be up to date at all times, and develop a better feeling of common European proactive citizenship, with inclusion, innovation and education as leading practices of their lives.
