Volunteers as a sign of solidarity
Start date: Mar 5, 2011,
Our organisation has been active in the field of development cooperation for the last 15 years and has become one of the most experienced NGOs in this field in Slovakia. Over this period we established partnerships with reliable local partners in African countries with focus on East Africa (Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia).Through this project, we wish to share our experience and know-how with interested young people and provide them with the opportunity to gather first hand experience of development work in both urban and rural setting. All the 12 volunteers will be placed with our key partner in Kenya that is providing capacity building to several projects working on development issues (community development, education, street children programes, programs for children and youth with disabilities, rehabilitation, etc.)During the process of implementation of the project we will.make use of our previous volunteers as well as experts with various backgrounds active in development cooperation. As development cooperation is rather complex we hope to carry a meaningful discussion and dialogue with young people on the importance of well-designed development cooperation and the responsibility each one of us has towards the less developed parts of the world. Upon return from Kenya all the volunteers will share their experience with their peerSi take part in various development education programmes and increase the awareness on development issues among young people in Slovakia. Furthermore, as part of the dissemination of results, the host organisation together with the volunteers will organise at least one seminar for young people on a specific development cooperation topic (such as working with marginalised children and youth, environmental protection in development context, etc. The topic will be agreed after the arrival of volunteers to Slovakia.)
