The overall aim of this AFS Interkultur project was to give young people from all socio-economic spheres the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of other European countries and their intercultural awareness and in that way we created a solid foundation for peace – not only in Europe but worldwide. This project included 12 young people who spend a period of between 3 and 12 months as EVS volunteers. During the time they lived and worked in Denmark and thus got an insight in Danish language and culture. The participants worked at eight different host projects with different themes, aims and objectives. This project included the following activities: Two volunteers (one from Latvia and one from Spain) lived and worked at the Brenderup Højskole for 9 and 10 months Two volunteers (one from France and one from Hungary) lived and worked at the Ranum Efterskole for 6 and 8 months Two volunteers (one from Spain and one from Germany) lived and worked at the Snoghøj Højskole for 12 months One volunteer (from Germany) worked at the Sankt Petri Church and stayed in a host family for 10 months. One volunteer (from Germany) worked at Bernards Hus and stayed in a host family for 12 months One volunteer (from France) worked at Cafe Utopia and stayed in a host family for 10 months One volunteer (from Spain) worked and was accommodated at Gammel Elmegaard for 3 months Two volunteers (one from Spain and one from Germany) worked at Øhavets Smakkecenter and stayed in host families for 12 months Five different nationalities was represented in the project. Some of the volunteers was hosted in host families and thus integrate more easily into the local culture and population, learned the local language and adjusted as well as he/she could to habits and traditions. Volunteers who was working as volunteers at boarding schools was living at their schools and therefore they became a part of the vibrant social life of the school. All volunteers was a part of their local AFS chapter and meet other volunteers and exchange students at the seminars and meetings arranged by AFS. They shared their experiences, points of views and information on both their host country Denmark as well as their countries of origin. It is our impression that through the volunteer work and the development of their intercultural competencies the participants has improved their employability and developed their social capital enabling them to become active participants in society and in the development of the European community. Worth mentioning is that we encountered some disagreements between our volunteers at Ranum Efterskole and the host project/AFS Interkultur. The national Agency was also involved, and the two volunteers went home earlier than expected. Since then Ranum Efterskole began inviting their next volunteers to visit them before the mobility period starts, that way they can share expectations and adjust the tasks to the volunteers showing up. This method has shown great success, and we recommend to all our hosting projects to at least have a skype meeting with the volunteers to share expectations.
