"Viewfinder" Cinematography Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree / Dublin-Budapest-Tallinn
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2021 PROJECT  FINISHED

University of Theatre and Film Arts (Hungary), the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Techology (Ireland) and the Baltic Film and Media School (Estonia) launch “VufindR” Cinematography Joint Master, a 2-year, 120-credit programme awarding a joint diploma on graduation, which invites applicants from all over the world with a degree in cinematography or photography. The master programme trains cinematographers for the globalised film arts and film industry, who are capable of creatively reinventing the existing digital visual culture. VufindR is an practice-based “Arts & Crafts” master. The students’ technical knowledge and skills are honed through the use of the most state of the art image recording devices and digital post-production studio technology at the hosting universities and involved film companies. Students may also take full advantage of the traditions of Hungarian cinematography training running since 1949 and giving world-famous professionals to the field, the minimalist and succinct northern visual traditions and the contact with the large volume American-British film production. VufindR promotes the understanding of the European visual and film heritage and states that every visual arts professional must be familiar with it. At the same time, via the intercultural student community, it also welcomes the visual perspectives of other cultures. The master’s level programme focusses solely on the development of cinematographic abilities and creativity, it does not provide parallel training for the rest of the roles in a film crew. It emphasises the value of individual creativity. The international training identifies the components of the students’ professional knowledge which are compatible world wide, making it possible for them to further develop these fields. The students spend a Dublin, Budapest and Tallin semester together in order to create an intercultural community which can serve as a platform for informal learning, a source of their personal development, in addition to formal learning. They then complete their Final Project at one of the three locations. The closing exam and the proclamation ceremony take place at “The Galway Film Fleadh” film festival. The relatively small hosting countries are parts of a bigger international film industry, with which the students of the joint master may develop a connection. The students can also collaborate with the students of two other joint masters (DocNomads, Kino-Eyes). The VufindR master is supported by 28 industry and HEI associated partners from all over the world, among them the Maaleh Film and Media School (Israel) and York University (Canada), which host students for short study periods. Via its structure, VufindR wishes to create the foundation for an increased percentage of Europe-based film co-productions in the global film industry through educating international students together in a European programme.
