The Mediterranean is in danger due to serious pollution. Several studies showed that 80 % of this pollution comes from the land which means that preserving the rivers and valleys is essential to protect our common sea (see further the parlamentary report Courteau, june 2011).In addition to this problem we face the effects of climate change that will affect in the next decennies the mediterranean area and especially the delta regions. The mediterranean region as one of the « hotspots » of climate change will face extremer temperatures, droughts, heat-waves, and the rise of sea level – all these changes affects especially the coastal valleys.Facing these problematics, the seminary “Coastal valleys in the medierranean region” will be a cooperation meeting of civil society actors and at the same time a seminary on the topic of environment and water in the mediterranean area. The participants are members of associations from 7 coastal countries and have a multiplying effect on the habitants and young people in their region. The seminary includes an echange of experiences and knowledge but also the organisation of common actions on different topics: Fighting pollution, preservation of biodiversity and edifical heritage, maintainance/extension of walking paths along the river banks, a reflexion on the place of natures in the city and on the utilisation of water, river celebrations, ... The meeting of associations will link different local projects and put them in a larger context of cooperation which is necessary facing the problems of pollution and climate change that cross frontiers. By meeting each other, the participants learn from each other : To know the different local situations, but also different ways to do depending on the economic, geographic, social and cultural frame, which will be an added value to the work of each partner. We wish to support, encourage and train each other as actors of civil society and parner countries.
