THIS PROJECT CONCERNS THE EXTENSION OF THE VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (VTMIS) TO COVER A GREATER AREA OF THE GREEK SEA AREA THAN THE AREA CURRENTLY COVERED. THE EXPECTED RESULTS RELATE MAINLY TO IMPROVING SEA TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND SURVEILLANCE AT OPEN SEAS AND ALONG THE COASTAL AREAS. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY AND THE PROTECTION OF THE SEA ENVIRONMENT. Expected Results: THE PHYSICAL OBJECT OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDES FOR VTS AT CHANIA: • ONE (1) VTS CENTRE AT CHANIA (SOUDA AREA)• TWO (2) SENSOR STATIONS (NW END OF THE ISLAND OF CRETE GRAMBOUSA AREA AND SW AREA OF THE ISLAND OF CRETE (WIDER REGION OF PALEOCHORA) • AN ESTIMATE OF THREE (3) TRANSMITTER STATIONS.
