UN SENDERO POR EUROPA "Fomento de estilo de vida saludable el entorno rural a través de la rehabilitación del sendero de la Font del Baladre"
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Feb 28, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "A Path through Europe: Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles in the Countryside through the Rehabilitation of the Path of the Font of Baladre" is an initiative of a group of young people from Muro de Alcoy. These young people have worked together to carry out this initiative in collaboration with and support from the Youth Department of the Town Hall. The town of Muro de Alcoy (Valencia, Spain) is located in the North of the Province of Alicante. Its population is approximately 9,000 inhabitants. It is located in a rural setting and a county enclave of great scenic and environmental value. Tourism is key to the economy of both the town and the region. The project aims to promote healthy living habits for youths through a series of activities connected to the environment. The backbone of this series is the restoration of a trail that runs through the town and has a great scenic, cultural and social value for the local people. This intervention is complemented by activities that will promote a balanced diet, made up of local products, and other activities that will encourage alternative leisure for youths, such as hiking or regional sports as the "Pelota Valenciana". Besides, the project aims to be an opportunity to revitalise the local youths and provide them information about opportunities offered by the European Union. This project will give the opportunity to youths from rural areas to interact with others coming from different cultures and countries. This project will host a total of 33 youths, including the leaders of each group. There is an informal group of youths (17 participants), the Italian Association Mille Piedi brings 8 youths and the Portuguese town of Moura, another 8 people. The young participants are aged between 16 and 20 years. It is worth stressing that most of them are high school students and undergraduates. The project began as an initiative of young people to find a space to share and interact with people from other countries. They are, from the beginning, involved in the development and planning of the project in a very active way. The youths themselves are going to be the protagonists of the exchange and it will be one of their responsibilities to try to create a positive atmosphere which warrants both coexistence and cooperation. In order to achieve these goals, it will be necessary to implement certain techniques and activities among the participants which promote the normal development of the action. Some of these activities, whenever possible, will be carried out in small groups in order to facilitate the participation and interaction of the youths, basing the composition of such groups on the principles of gender parity and cultural diversity. There will be assemblies of assessment and evaluation every night after the dinner. A major impact on the town is expected. Firstly, because it is going to be based on a natural space known and loved by the people of the town, and it will help in its preservation and promotion; secondly, because this is going to energize the youth population of Muro de Alcoy, along with those of the Italian and Portuguese towns; thirdly, because it is going to produce a positive effect on the participants, as the activities and workshops will be offered as an alternative leisure and healthy life-style for young people, and, additionally, we hope it can act as an enormous revulsive with a multiplier effect for new actions and initiatives derived from it, undertaken by the youths who then will understand the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ Program. During and after the project, we will promote the actions taken through social networks and different web tools. To achieve this objective, we will add the necessary documents and videos where the participants? impressions and experiences are collected and sent to their educational institutions. To sum up, this is a project undertaken by the young people who, from the field of non-formal education, aim to acquire the skills and values which make the creation of the European citizenship possible, who are responsible of the environment, of others and us.
