Transnational River Basin Districts on the Eastern Side of the Baltic Sea Network - TRABANT (TRABANT)
Start date: Jul 10, 2005, End date: Dec 31, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

Project Transnational River Basin Districts on the Eastern Side of the Baltic Sea Network - TRABANT endeavours to improve basis for the integration of significant ecological and management aspects in the Eastern Baltic Sea region, including links to spatial development. The conditions in the Baltic Sea result to a large extent from the activities in river basins. The activities have been and will be affected through spatial planning as well as through river basin management planning. The project concentrates on cross-regional cooperation between EU countries and also with non-EU countries. The project compares, evaluates and tests methods and tools to be used in the key tasks in river basin analyses and management, taking particularly into account transnational issues. Achievements: Main achievements include surveys on methodologies on status assessment and monitoring and on pressures in the context of water management. Information exchange with various actors in the project area regarding these issues was fruitful. Based on the information exchange, on 11 country-specific studies in the Baltic Sea Region and on four case studies, a report of development in water planning was produced. A training programme for water managers and a methodological pilot, both contributing to public participation method testing and development, were carried out.The results include common transnational approaches on river basin analyses and management, on public participation, and a survey and analysis of development in water management, also its interface to spatial planning. The projects contributes to better understanding in these issues. There are two final reports i) a compact general guide book on river basin management and analyses and ii) a report on monitoring and status assessment. Additionally, two wide intermediate reports were produced, firstly on development of river basin management and its links to spatial planning, a survey in all Baltic Sea Region countries, secondly on methods of public participation. The project included a total of nine pilot and case studies. In the Tacis part of the project, pilot studies of Vuoksi and Narva have been added in 2008. Project's final seminar was held on 11-13 September 2007 in Helsinki, Finland, and abstracts of presentations were published. Other main workshops took place in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and in Sweden and in the Tacis work also in Russia and Belarus.
