Transfer of Curricula for Vocational Language Education of the Deaf in Europe (DEAFVOC 2)
The Deaf belong to a European minority which has to fight over the right to their own language, cultural heritage and identity. They too often face the danger of falling out of education and working life because of poor language skills. In the previous project DEAFVOC www.deafvoc.fi a model curricula “Sign Language as a Mother Tongue” and “Written Language as a Second Language for the Deaf” was developed to be used in language teaching in vocational schools. During the project DEAFVOC it became obvious that in addition to the curricula, also teaching material is very much needed. Hence the reason the main target group (teachers and students) is quite small in each country, cooperation on European level is really necessary. The main objectives of the proposed project DEAFVOC 2 are 1) adaptation of the model curricula “Sign Language as a Mother Tongue” and “Written Language as a Second Language for the Deaf”, 2) facilitation of innovative new teaching materials and methods by drawing materials together, and by gathering didactically relevant information on teaching of sign language and written language for the Deaf in the project countries. The main outcomes of the project are nationally modified versions of the curricula and models of different kind of teaching materials to be analysed and compared. Feedback from the main target group is gained already during the project when the curricula and teaching materials are piloted in vocational schools and training courses for the teachers. This ensures participation of the end-users in the project. The project aims at having a positive impact on the current situation of the language teaching in vocational education for the Deaf in EU-countries in order to guarantee the Deaf a possibility to study their mother tongue – sign language – as well as a national written language. Bilingual education will ensure the students better possibilities in vocational education and working life. The Deafvoc 2 consortium includes:1) two strong Deaf NGOs, the Finnish Association of the Deaf (FAD) and the Irish Deaf Society (IDS)2) two universities; Klagenfurt University (ZGH) and Maribor University (UM), experienced in Deaf education, linguistic questions, research on ICT assisted teaching for students with special needs. ZGH was responsible of curriculum “Written Language as a Second Language for the Deaf” in the previous DEAFVOC project.3) the Finnish National Board of Education(FNBE) which is educational authority with international contacts and grass-root level communication with vocational institutes. FNBE was responsible of the curriculum “Sign Language as a Mother Tongue” in the previous DEAFVOC project.
