Training SL Interpreters: International Settings

For the Deaf, the availability of quality Sign Language (SL) interpretation services isdecisive in empowering them to manage their own interests and assuring opportunitiesfor equal participation in the multicultural European society. The objective of this projectis to develop SL interpreter education for interpreting in international settings and raiseawareness of the good professional practices that facilitate this participation.The main outputs of the project are: 1) the education package for “Sign LanguageInterpreting in International Settings”, 2) a DVD-ROM compiling the pedagogical plansand teaching materials for the package, 3) two test courses: a 1-day videoconferenceseminar for beginners and a 4-day course for participants with some experience ofinterpreting in international settings and 4) a web-based “Quick Guide to Working withInternational Interpreter Teams”.Dissemination of the results occurs through three main activities: 1) seminars andpresentations, 2) direct contact with key actors and 3) on the project website. As a directresult of the project SL interpreter education organisations and trainers will have accessto material that will enable them to offer quality training on interpreting in internationalsettings. This will improve the skill levels and trans-European employability of SLinterpreter students and professionals. Through providing information on good SLinterpretation practices in international settings the project will facilitate the cooperationof international interpreter teams and the organising of quality interpretation services.The availability of quality services will improve opportunities for equal participation ininternational venues for both Deaf and hearing and their awareness of each others'languages and cultures will increase. Finally, national and European communities willbenefit from a language friendly environment and increased opportunities for learningabout SLs and the culture of the Deaf.
