Training Requirements and Nursing Skills for Mobility

'TRaNSforM' aims to identify training requirements and nursing skills for mobility* for working nurses. Patients have a right to receive best quality health care which meets their needs culturally, and excellent nursing competence can provide this. In nursing, sharing learning and appreciating workforce difference in other cultural environments develops excellent intercultural practice and increases confidence and capacity to care. New nursing programmes offer ever increasing opportunities for exchange and cultural learning development, such learning opportunities have not been accessible to all nurses and for many, skills for intercultural competence have been learnt through ad-hoc experience rather than in a systematic manner. The ‘TRaNSforM’ project includes development of a practical framework of skills for managing the impact of mobility for nurses, with trans-european sharing of experience and ideas. Participants create secondary benefit as learning is cascaded to national and local health care practice settings. The ‘TRaNSforM’ framework will be used by nurses to self assess personal development and opportunities for learning intercultural competence and applied to work-based learning programmes to develop ideas and identify opportunities. The framework will be mapped to the European Qualifications Framework, and validation in the Europass system will be explored.*Mobility includes movement of populations, including trans-european and international movement of nurses, patients and workforce colleagues. Mobility may be long term or transient, result from incoming migration to a country or outward migration to another, and may include circular or transitional migration between countries. Mobility is a major issue in the European health workforce economy.
