Training Course for Non Violent Activism
Friends of the Earth Cyprus had organizes eight days training course about "training for Non violent Activism" during 12th until 19th of October 2014. Two of the days will refer to the arrival and departure of the participants. Our main goal was for the participants to act in a holistic way. Moreover, our training course objectives are:
1) Improving participants critical thinking and creativity
2) Learning to think and react as an active European Citizen
3) Respecting the laws and the Environment
4) Acquiring social and civil competence
Friends of the Earth has recruited 22 participants from 6 partners in EU Programme countries , Participants were young people that are interested in acting and reacting with local community on environmental issues. During the training course we discussed about the theoretical background and impact of activism in general and more specifically by indicating environmental issues in Cyprus. In addition, we exchanged ideas for good practices of activism and emphasizing on exploitation, dissemination and visibility of activist actions. We used non formal education techniques such as role plays, debates , simulation games and team building activities in order to inspire the young activists to prepare two activist peaceful non violent actions concerning Cyprus environmental issues. Furthermore, theywere trained to use web tools for promoting the actions. More over, the workshop included reflection sessions on every action and dissemination through press releases, social media blogs, photos and video.
There was audiovisual support for similar activist examples from Cyprus and also each participant had presented good practices that their organization uses (a short digital manual of these practices will be produced in that way). It is important to emphasize that this workshop was focusing in how to influence local community for the common good. In that direction we promoted that the dialogue with local authorities and the citizens is important in order to achieve a satisfying result.
The longer term benefits will be a repetition of this training course in a local and transnational level by the participants of this training course. With the implementation of these non violent activist actions, Friends of the Earth Cyprus focused on mainstreaming with stakeholders. More specifically by adopting the experiences and results of this training course we took one step further to ask policy makers to rethink some laws that have a negative impact in the environment and our quality of life in local and national level.
