Why to promote active citizenship?TC “Think Globally, Act Locally” is concerned with low active participation of youth in democratic life. A democracy cannot function properly without participation of its citizens and unfortunately youth participation in political process is recently decreasing. Young voter turnout becomes worse each year. However active citizenship for democratic life is more than the duty to vote every 4 or 5 years. It can also be exemplified by citizens’ participation in civil society organizations and social movements, student participation in governance of schools and universities, as well as democratic participation in family. But unfortunately young people’s interest in taking responsibility voluntarily in society has significantly decreased and this poses a lot of threats to democratic life not only in national level but also in wider world and European level. Societies across world need influential leaders equipped with skills and good knowledge, who will promote the idea of active citizenship. Today’s youth volunteer more than old people; they are much better educated; and they are less likely to drink excessively or use drugs than previous generations of youth but that doesn’t seem like a recipe for political apathy. What we need is to raise awareness among youth and encourage them to involve actively in democratic life. If we agree problem of low active participation of youth is an international problem, why not to try to solve it together and fight against it internationally? As stated in the article 165 of the Lisbon Treaty, one of the aims of EU actions is “Encouraging the development of youth exchanges and of exchanges of socioeducational instructors, and encouraging the participation of young people in democratic life in Europe.”, and we are ready for action! For the purpose of the training course “Think Globally, Act Locally”, our target group is young people, who has the potential to be youth leader and youth worker in their society, has motivation to work on promoting active citizenship and solving political apathy issues but have not enough theoretical and practical knowledge of tools to reach their objectives.Main Objective:-During 7-day-training course in Brussels, Belgium, we aim enhance the knowledge, skills and capacities of 35 youth workers from 14 different countries in order to design and implement social action projects to tackle with the issue of low active participation of youth.Specific Objectives:-to equip youth workers with knowledge of tools to promote the idea of active citizenship, to encourage youth to participate in democratic life and to prevent challenges that Europe and the wider world may face in future due to political apathy-to empower understanding of active participation context so that participants can make informed decisions their society needs-to encourage youth workers to explore existing situation and issues that are important to them and participate in decision making process-to help youth leaders to build self-confidence, develop a sense of initiative and enhance their soft skills-to inform participants about Erasmus+ Programme as a tool for youth mobility-to strengthen European dimension, solidarity and proactive approach to active participation issueDesired impact at national level:- Project will promote mutual understanding and peaceful cooperation among nations in the world- Project will promote Belgium and Belgian Culture ,- Project will promote EU&EU Citizenship in a developing country, which is not a member of EU- Our project will be a good practice and will lead possible implementation in other parts of the country and Europe.
