The Shift

'The Shift' is an Erasmus + project that resulted from the collaboration between Żgħażagħ Azzjoni Kattolika (ŻAK) and Limerick Youth Service (LYS). 'The Shift' aimed to reach out and share experiences through mobility projects. Those who benefited from this initiative were vulnerable young people, especially early school leavers. By a shift in the work conducted in ŻAK and LYS we aimed to reach more vulnerable young people. The other shift was for the young people from the respective organisations which would allow them to experience peer education with other vulnerable young people. The third shift was the movement of the vulnerable young people to a new learning experience, the mobility project. To achieve this, the project consisted of 5 main activities. The first activity was the training for youth leaders and workers. During the program they identified methodologies of how to work with vulnerable young people, how to identify their individual needs, and the employability skills needed. The concept of peer education was also very important during this program to be more effective, therefore the youth workers/leaders explored the definition of peer education. The idea behind this first activity was to encourage teamwork and collaboration between those involved in the exchanges with the young people and also to include sessions of preparation for the upcoming activities. The other activities consisted of four youth exchanges focused on intra and interpersonal skills and entrepreneurship, respectively. During these exchanges the participants were led from learning to knowing, knowing to doing, doing to being, and eventually to how to live together. With regards to the objectives for the young people we aimed to increase their employability skills and improve their career prospects. Improving their learning performance is made possible by increasing a sense of initiative and entrepreneurship. Therefore, we aimed to empower the young people to participate actively in the groups they form part of, and in society, by starting with this project where they were encouraged to improve their language competences and enhance their inter-cultural awareness. The methods proposed were of a non-formal nature including workshops, games, case studies and so on. This project aimed at increasing the collaboration between partners in the EU countries. It also aimed to help the respective programs improve and be innovative. By sharing ideas and good practices, local programs are made more effective and attractive for young people. We are also aware of the importance to recognize non-formal education and we wanted to use this experience with young people as an example of non-formal education which is recognised and valued even in the job market.
