With our project ”The Refugees” we wish to empower young refugees to share their stories in an innovative book project. The young refugees are encouraged to share their story – a story of leaving their country, family, friends, and everything they have ever known, behind. Each of the young refugees will receive support from a dedicated volunteer who will help them write their story during a workshop, where the two participants will meet once a week for 10 weeks. The project will result in a book containing 20 essays about 4-5 pages each. The essay will be a personal, honest story about the encounter with a new country, a new culture and a story about dreams and hopes for the future. With the project the young group of refugees will have an opportunity to tell their own story and be heard. Not only will they be able to share their story with others in a similar situation, but they will also be able to reach out to the rest of the population. This will happen through the distribution of this book as well as the final conference where decision makers and the young refugees will face each other in a mutual dialogue. This project will enable the young refugees to tell their story to the politicians, the caseworkers, the experts, the media etc. This will create a new awareness and understanding of their situation and how it feels to have to leave your own country behind and become ‘a refugee’ in another.
