SUNY Cortland’s International Studies Program (IST) and Clark Center for International Education (CCIE) will develop teaching and research on EU topics through the following activities: • an interdisciplinary, team-taught, introductory course to the EU • a Model EU course• a yearlong EU Film Series • annual EU Day events showcasing student and faculty research • research dissemination at national and international conferences.The project involves scholars from International Studies, History, Political Science, Modern Languages, Art and Art History, Foundations and Social Advocacy, and Sport Management. Dr. Alexandru Balas, director of the CCIE/coordinator of IST, will oversee the EU course. He will be joined by faculty from the departments mentioned above, to team-teach it. The course is comprised of the following units:• Introduction • History of European Integration • Economic Integration• Political Integration • EU and Conflict Resolution • EU and the World • EU and Education• European Art and Culture • Sports in the EU Construction • Synthesis The project includes the following innovative components: • The unit on economic integration will be taught in partnership with Babes-Bolyai University, Romania, as a Collaborative Online International Learning module (webinars)• Each of the Introduction to the EU’s units features student policy debates on EU topics • Students will present research at the annual Undergraduate Research Conference • The applied learning course, Model EU, features a EU role-playing simulation• A Film Series focused on EU topics is integrated in the two courses• Student and faculty research presentations at the annual EU Day. This project is the next, logical step in promoting the EU at SUNY Cortland. It builds upon a EU-USA Atlantis Grant (2010-2014) supporting student exchanges with Manchester Metropolitan and Babes-Bolyai Universities, and upon a new faculty partnership with Babes-Bolyai.
