The objective of the project is to devote the 15th Annual Jean Monnet Dubrovnik Seminar (at Inter University Centre, Dubrovnik) to the topic “The EU and Trust in the Online Environment”, focusing on the future of EU privacy and data protection rules which result from the balance struck in relation to public interest in the availability of information, security reasons for controlling data, and the development of the digital economy. Recently, there have been major developments in this field, including decisions of the Court of Justice, affecting individuals, companies, and States within the EU as well as elsewhere in the world.The main six-day event will combine two types of activities: lectures (morning sessions) and young researchers’ presentations (afternoon). It will bring together diverse participants: well-established academics, young researchers, students, practising lawyers, judges, policy makers and NGO representatives, coming from EU countries, the Western Balkans and the USA. Their interaction will lead to new ideas and new knowledge, innovation, cross-fertilisation and the spread of European content. The seminar and conference will lead to the following outputs and impact:- transfer and facilitated exchange of knowledge and new ideas on EU privacy and data protection law;- the spread of new EU-related knowledge via a seminar website and by participants taking new ideas back to their academic institutions in the Western Balkans, the EU and the USA;- increased employability and improved career opportunities for young researchers, resulting from better visibility, networking and publication of their presentations; - increased capacity to teach and research this new and important EU topic, which will contribute to the creation of a modern teaching environment and new curricula content; - increased critical thinking and awareness about EU privacy and data protection rules, leading to greater civic engagement and enhancing EU governance.
