The EU has been in crisis for a decade. This inter-disciplinary project explores whether the time is right for a new grand bargain to rescue the European project. Through bridging the gap between academic analysis, policy and politics, BARGAIN presents a critical overview of the state of the Union, how it got there and what is to be done to turn around the unhappy and precarious state of the Union. Through a high-level conference, a set of roundtable debates and policy briefs, and an academic publication BARGAIN will address the following questions: Can Europe succeed in beating the odds and coming through this decade of multiple crises? Are there actors and means that will enable it to be inclusive and look for ways to accommodate its diversity? Is more integration where needed and more subsidiarity wherever possible a good motto for Europe to come out of the crisis? BARGAIN will focus on whether there are prospects for growth as long as the viability of the euro is in question. It will also examine what kind of treaty reform is possible given that the democratic credentials of the European project appear to be deeply challenged and public support for integration has reached a historical low. It will also focus on governance in the euro-area, labour market disparities and education as a public good in times of crisis in an attempt to offer constructive ideas on how a new grand bargain may be achieved in order to move the European project forward.
