PROJECT
FINISHED
"Teacher Development for Dropout Prevention"was a mobility project planned by Liceul Pedagogic “Ioan Popescu”in order to acquire new strategies to motivate our students to continue their studies in order to achieve their educational&professional potential.
The main objective of this project was the learning, use&promotion,by our teaching staff,of the newest, modern&innovative methodologies and educational practices, existent at European level,in order to increase the interest in education and maintain in the school system the youth at risk of dropping out.
An important objective of the European Development Plan of our organization is to halve, over the next two years, the number of students at risk of dropping out school, since we are dealing with a rate of 16.29%.This number is alarming especially in the context of the doubling,in recent years,of the dropout rate at high school level in our county.
This phenomenon strongly affects us because our school is prone to failure in school, due to the fact that much of its school population is in difficulty(66.52%of the students are from rural areas,28.49% -have unemployed parents,23.05 % -have parents working abroad,25.84%-have only one parent).
Considering that the most important determinants of dropout,in our country, are the learning difficulties and the low motivation of students for school activities(UNICEFstudy),our school aims to change its teaching methods approach as to find the best ways to motivate students to continue their education.
The specific objectives of the project were:
-to promote the use of innovation&creativity in teaching&learning, adapting them to the educational requirements of students and motivating them to learn throughout life
-to develop professional&transversal competences of teachers and ensure their recognition by attending training courses abroad
-to enrich the portfolio of the organization with modern, efficient&flexible strategies and practices of approaching the curriculum, thus developing the key skills necessary to the students’ educational&professional path
-to promote intercultural dialogue and cooperation with European partners, thus strengthening the sense of citizenship,European identity and the internationalization of the institution
-to improve the language and communication skills of the teachers involved, and thus of their students.
The objectives were achieved by:
-forming the project&management teams
-elaboration of the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, dissemination&sustainability plans and their annexation to the School management plan
-implementation,dissemination,monitoring&evaluation of the project
-participation to training activities
The project aimed to certain subject areas which were noted to need a change in their teaching approach. The selection of trainees respected the principle of equal opportunities(both men&women). The project team participated actively, aided by the management team,in all project activities, from development&planning.
Thus the training focused on the following topics:

-dropout prevention-2 teachers(1 school mistress&class master and 1 teacher&inspector of Pedagogy with responsibilities in activities combating early school leaving) participating between21/03- 1/04/2016 to the course"Current Issues in Education-Early School Leaving"provided by the ITC International TEFL Certificate s.r.o in Prague,Czech Republic
-interculturality -2 teachers of Geography and art history participating between 6-15/04/2016 to the course"Tracing back Europe-From Thessaloniki to Istanbul"provided by Stichting chain foundation in Thessaloniki Greece
-cross-curricular teaching- 2 teachers of social&humanistic disciplines participating between 23/05-3/06/2016 to the course"Innovative approaches to teaching"provided by the ITC International TEFL Certificate s.r.o. in Prague, Czech Republic
The project allowed the teachers and, through them, their students,a better understanding of the diversity of European cultures&values and the importance of the communication in English for their own promotion, and promotion of their culture&country.
The application of student-centered methods&interdisciplinary learning helps motivate students, demonstrating the usefulness of learning and attracting them. Thus, both our teachers&students have already improved their key skills needed to develop their personal&socio-professional integration as active citizens of Europe.
