The areas where our institution has to ensure the academic development of its teachers are the teaching of English as a foreign language, the instruction of other subjects like Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics in English and the use of IT tools in the teaching process. Expanding our international connections is also considered significant as we would like to offer valuable programs to the students, who will be able to continue their education after acquiring the necessary competencies and of course thorough knowledge. The teaching of English is the most important priority of our school. This is the basis of the bilingual programme, where science subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Geography – are also taught in English, so the school puts special emphasis on the further training of these teachers. The subject Civilisation of the English-speaking countries aims to get the students acquainted with the culture of these countries. Our school attaches special importance to giving the chance to its teachers to instruct themselves in an English-speaking country in order to become highly qualified, near-native speakers of English. The five future participant teachers are all dedicated, open-minded, acknowledged members of the school staff, who will set a good example to their colleagues with their enthusiasm. Four of them have been teaching subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Civilisation – in English for several years. The fifth teacher is an English – History teacher and as the school is planning to start to teach History in English, her participation in an in-service course is absolute relevant. Three teachers of English are applying for language and methodology courses in the United Kingdom, organised by International Study Programmes (ISP). The courses are in three different parts of the country – Exeter (England), Dunfermline (Scotland) and Belfast (Northern Ireland), thus ensuring experiencing culture from different perspectives. Two science teachers are going to take part in courses organised by the Executive Training Institute Malta (ETI). One of the courses combines the principles of CLIL with its practical use through on-line tools, while the other develops ICT skills through making use of technology tools. Both are fundamental and fit the profile of our grammar school, so they will contribute to the improvements made in the fields of teaching science.
The implementation of the project has already started – with assessing the needs, setting the aims, choosing the right courses and participants, getting in touch with the organising institutions. As soon as our application is approved, the common work of the sending and receiving organisations will continue, planning and organising and then taking part in the courses. After that the teachers’ self-reflection will be very important as well as the dissemination of the results. We are planning to do it both in our institution and in the media, in a wide spectrum. With the participation of five teachers, our whole staff and students will benefit a lot as our students will get higher, more modern education with the help of creative methodology, while our colleagues can gain experience and new teaching ideas indirectly, not to mention the enthusiasm and inspiration for their further work. Nowadays it is not enough for teachers to teach their subjects. We must help students acquire competencies which will enable them to stand the test on the labour market, even in this insecure situation. To be capable of doing this we teachers also have to develop continually. We can encourage our students to be open and find the ways to enhance their communication and language skills, learn and perhaps work in a foreign country. It is extremely important for the youth to get to know and accept other cultures, and they have to be able to represent their own country abroad. By being open to other cultures, we can respect ours more as it is a mutual process.
Distinguishing the short and long-term effects of a project is not easy as the boundaries can be blurred. The reviving enthusiasm of the teachers and the renewal in their profession will bring immediate results in the teaching process of the school, which will probably last for long. The whole teaching staff will benefit from the project as we can refresh the common work by new methods and ideas. Good quality teaching can be maintained only by participating is refresher courses. Obviously it will be the students who will first notice that positive change. The development is to serve their needs and motivation. In the long term, we hope to achieve positive results in the enrolment of new students at our school, making it more attractive to parents and pupils-to-be alike. Not only our grammar school, but also the town – Kőszeg – can benefit a lot from this project by extending its international connections through participating teachers.
