Start date: Jun 1, 2015,
End date: Jun 1, 2016
PROJECT
FINISHED
Kaivoksela School is comprised of around 400 students and approximately a quarter of our students have a multicultural background. In addition, we also have English language (CLIL) classes from 1st to 6th grade. Kaivoksela school integrates special needs students, which also creates a need for teachers’ professional development.
The main objective of the applicants is professional development. This includes gaining skills in new pedagogical methods that are relevant to a cultural and linguistically diverse student body. We hope to broaden our views on learning as well as gain new tools for both interacting with students and taking on new pedagogical models.
The three applicants include a subject teacher (who teaches Finnish as a second language), as well as class teachers from both Finnish and English (CLIL) classrooms. In this way, our knowledge and skills are based on different starting points and purposes. Our school is thus represented from early education all the way to 6th grade. We expect to both share our own knowledge and skills, as well as develop new methods and ideas together with our coursemates.
The course will emphasize language and communication skills, professional skills as well as the ability to guide and organize. The course will rely on group work in which teachers from different countries will collaborate. Working together will require the participants to interact with different people and cultures, and thus develop intercultural communication skills.
Upon acceptance of the application, the teachers will finalize their choice from the courses found on the School Gateway Portal as well as organize the necessary practical arrangements of attending the course, such as getting flight tickets. We will familiarize ourselves with the theme of the course beforehand. Moreover, we will prepare and plan how to share the Finnish perspective on education. After the course, we will present the course and its main points to our colleagues.
By taking part in the course, the teachers will gain new skills that they can utilize in both their own teaching and share with their colleagues. At our school, we actively use team and pair teaching, through which it is possible to disseminate in practice what we have learned. The lessons learned at the course will also be shared with the rest of the staff during our staff meeting. We believe that the learning opportunities provided by the course will have broad and far-reaching benefits for our working community.
