The project "Short-term EVS in Portugal – a first experience of mobility" addresses young people from 18 to 25, who live in Montpellier and its region, and who are facing cultural, social and/or economic difficulties. It was developped on the fact that, at the local level, a majority of young people face following problems: low level of qualification, high unemployment rate, socio-economic fragilities, discriminative and xenophobic situations.
Its main objective is to allow these young people, who are far away from all mobility programmes, to be able to have a first experience abroad, while getting involved in a voluntary project aimed at the local community. This is an opportunity to discover other languages and other cultures, to step back from their own difficulties and environment, and to think about one's place among society, one's desires and personal project.
4 young people will be able to do a short-term EVS, lasting 3 weeks, at the association Vertigem in Arrimal, in Portugal. Activities are planned in July and in September 2014. They will cover helping local teams in the daily tasks at the farm (organic production and catering animals), recycling materials and how to re-use them, and implementing workshops for children from local schools and kindergartens. Methods of non formal education will be used through all stages of the project.
"Short-term EVS in Portugal – a first experience of mobility" aims at increasing the autonomy of these young people far away from existing programmes, at allowing them to develop a stable personal and professional project. The obvious impact on their personal development will happen together with a positive impact on the local population in terms of tolerance and open-mindedness.
We hope that this project, on a long-term basis, will allow a fairer vision of European programmes and a higher participation of civil society as a whole to the European construction.
