Student interest representatives should understand the authority construction and principles of operation, as well as thedecision-making process and be aware of possible tools that can be used in the development and adoption of the decision. It isalso necessary to promote youth empowerment, active participation in the democratic processes and to promote equity and theavailability of higher education policy making processes in Latvia.To address these issues in a sustainable way, a project with the support of ERASMUS+ was carried out.The aims of the project:1. Understanding: create interest in representatives and widener understanding about higher education policy making;2. Influence: Identify and stimulate students opportunities to influence the decisions of the institutions of the HEI;3. Participation: to promote student participation and willingness to go deeper into the national processes, by demonstrating themthe decision-making processes and principles in the local scale - their HEI;4. Dialogue: to encourage student interest representatives and HEI administration mutual interaction and understanding of eachof the parties involved, the needs and wishes;5. Capacity: to engage and educate new student representatives encouraging the capacity of student self-governance bodies.6. Sustainability: to stimulate organisations sustainability and transfer of experience by educating young people for competentwork in the Student Union of Latvia and in decision-making bodies in the universities;Participantes were young people aged between 18 - 28 years of age, as well as higher education policy makers and experts ofdifferent fields of competence. Total number of participants exceeded the planed total of 332 people.Within the framework of the project a total of 7 activities were organised for different level student representatives. Theseactivities were carried out using student-centered learning based methods. During the project members improved variouscompetences (in accordance with the Competence dictionary) related to the cooperation between people, problem solving andthinking, personal efficiency and process management.In the long term, the project will shape aware and informed student interest representatives, thereby improving the culture ofrepresentation in decision-making bodies, promoting active participation of young people, and improving the quality of highereducation and sustainability as a whole.
