Stop Gender Based Violence Now!
Stop Gender Based Violence Now!
Start date: Aug 1, 2014,
End date: Feb 28, 2015
PROJECT
FINISHED
It is widely considered that Europe has managed great achievements in the context of gender equity last decades. The high education level and the financial development might have contributed a lot to fill the gap between genders. Yet, between 1/5 and 1/ 4 of all women in EU have been violence victims at least once in their life after the age of 18 while more than 1/10 of them have been sexually abused (COE, 2011). In fact Lithuania, is not too far away from this phenomenon. 63.3% of the women in the country have been violence and sexual abuse victims after the age of 16. At the same time, 71.4% of Lithuanian women have been sexual harassed by strangers and 43.8% by familiar persons (http://unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/stats/gender/vaw/surveys/Lithuania/VAW_Report_Lithuania.pdf).
Gender Based Violence (GBV) still exists in all countries and has nothing to do with age, culture, socio-economic status, education level and nationality. No matter the efforts done, it remains a very serious obstacle towards gender equity and is recognized as human rights’ violation that leads to discrimination, inequity, social exclusion and fewer job opportunitiesIn this context, JMB envisions a world in which men, women and LGBTQI people face no discrimination, are socially included; enjoy their rights together with the right to work. This project aims at developing the competences of the youth workers to work with the topic of GBV and stimulate the active participation of young people to respect, prevent and stop GBV.
The objectives of the project are
- To share different experiences and cases of GBV between partners
- To conceptualize the difference between sex and gender and understand the causes and effects of GBV
- To work with tools that prevent and stop GBV
- To develop personal action plans that deal with GBV on local/national level
- To create a publication about activities that are related with dealing with the topic of GBV and disseminate it though the partner’s networks
There will be 28 participants involved in this project. They will be youth workers, youth leaders, trainers, organizers and coaches who are actively involved in the partner organizations. The project is consisted of a training course and follow-up activities.
The training course “Stop GBV Now!” will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania between 11/12/2014-18/12/2014. It will use methods of non-formal education, self-directed and experiential learning. The non-formal education will support participants to acquire essential competences and thus contribute to their learning and personal/professional development. Non-formal education uses a learner-centred approach which enables participants to self-direct their learning according to their needs. In this way, participants build their capacities and develop themselves.
The training course will lead to 2 concrete results/ follow-up activities.
1) Each participant will prepare a follow-up action plan that passes on the competences they gained to their colleagues in partner organizations. Moreover, the action plan describes the actions/workshops/activities the youth workers need to undertake in order to address the issue of GBV on local/national level. Actions/workshops/activities will target young people at local/national level.
2) The concepts, terms and definitions, activities and hand outs used during the training course will be compiled into an online publication that will support the youth workers in the implementation of their action plans and other youth workers/organizations that aim to deal with the topic. This publication will be disseminated though the networks of the partners.
“Stop GBV Now!” is envisaged to have a tangible impact on participants, participating organizations local, regional, national and European level.
- The competences of the youth workers that participate in the project will be developed and thus the youth workers will be knowledgeable, confident and skilled to work with the topic of GBV
- The partners will also build their capacities in working with the topic because the youth workers will have the task to transmit the competences gained during the training course to their colleagues in their organizations
- The follow-up actions/workshops/activities of the youth workers on local level will reduce the incidents of gender-based violence, raise awareness about GBV, promote the respect towards diversity and increase the active participation of young people in preventing and stopping GBV
- Last, the online publication of the project which will be disseminated though the partners’ networks will help other youth workers and youth organizations (out of this project) to learn about GBV, but also find activities they can use in the projects they implement.
In all cases, the project is envisioned to have a long term impact, empower youth NGOs to address the issue of GBV and create a young European Community that is non-violent, non-discriminative, respectful, proactive and active.
