Carl-Benz-Schule has been an integrated secondary school for 5 years. In this time, the classes (Year 7 to 10) we teach have become increasingly heterogenous: they range from special needs students with learning difficulties, emotional-social problems and Asperger's syndrome to high achievers, many of them of immigration background. Taking this into account, the subjects Maths, German and English are taught in internal differentiation in Year 7 and 8, whereas in Year 9 to 10 pupils learn these subjects in separate, ability-based groups. In this project, our staff aims at enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. We want to make our school more international by adopting a more Euorpean approach in trainings abroad, acquiring new teaching methods - with special focus on incorporating digital media into teaching - and by exploring new ways of organising learning and teaching processes.The project was initiated by the highly motivated, interdisciplinary team "Erasmus+", consisting of three English teachers (also teaching German and Biology), a teacher of French, Music and German and two colleagues with the subjects Mathematics, Physics, and P.E.Each participant is applying for a different training course, partly in different countries and in different languages, in order to gain a wide range of new teaching ideas and methods. The courses focus on individualized learning in the inclusive classroom, integrating information technology into teaching (different subjects), methodology of English and current cultural issues in France, Great Britain and Ireland.After completing the courses, we will disseminate our newly acquired knowledge and skills first in our departments by offering workshops to our colleagues, then in the entire staff so that we can together develop and establish new ways of learning and teaching at our school, thus better meeting the needs of our heterogenous pupils.In order to gain reliable data on the progress we are making, we are planning to carry out mutual job shadowing and encourage pupils to fill in a questionnaire before and after completing the training courses abroad.By starting these innovations at our school, we are aiming at using our resources more effectively, both the professional knowledge of our staff and our institutional framework (IT-rooms, laptops, smart boards) for interdisciplinary project work using the digital media (including eTwinning on the long run) and new forms of individualized and cooperative forms of learning.The long-term effect of our project should comprise a more international, European approach to teaching and learning and the improved quality of both, thus fully expoiting the potential of the staff and primarily, of all pupils by meeting their different educational needs. This will enable our pupils to achieve their professional, and thus, also personal, goals more successfully.
