Stapeley Broad Lane's MFL Project - The Language and Culture of Spain
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Stapeley Broad Lane's MFL Project - the Language and Culture of Spain The school teaches French from Key Stage 1 through to year 6 but gives pupils a 'taste' of German in years 3 and 4, and of Spanish in years 5 and 6. The two teachers of Spanish are enthusiastic, having started as non-Spanish speakers, and have attended a course in Santander already and have completed some self-study. The school would now like to forge links with a Spanish school to put the learning of the language into a real context and to further our inter-cultural understanding, adding to our international dimension. It is our aim to set up regular communication with the partner school to exchange ideas and practices. This may involve use of ICT eg skyping, exchanging videos etc or by more traditional forms of communication. Above all, it is a chance to share our languages and culture and to hear native speakers. The school intends to send 2 participants - the aforementioned teachers of the years 5 and 6 classes. As well as deepening their own language skills and knowledge of Spain, they intend to establish links with our partner school in Spain. This will lead to an exchange of cultural knowledge and encourage both schools to continue their language learning. These teachers started their learning of the Spanish language from scratch and have benefited from a previous course in Santander, and from self-study. The activities included in the course will be visits to the partner school to meet pupils and staff and establish ways of communicating in the future. There will be study of the Spanish language, provided by native speakers, to strengthen the participants' language skills. There will also be activities to develop an understanding of the Spanish culture, and opportunities to gather authentic resources. The activities during the course will be shared with a range of stakeholders, including governors, staff and pupils. It is envisaged that the outcome of the course will have a beneficial effect on the teaching of Spanish to our year 5 and 6 classes, lead to a long-term partnership with the Spanish school - perhaps leading to reciprocal visits, the setting up of a Spanish club in school, and a real development in the understanding of Spanish culture.
