2. A summary of the project
2.1 Context/ Backgrounds.
Sport and physical activity are essential to improve the health and welfare of the society and it can play an important role in initiating changes in the community if it is used as a tool for educational aims in order to work with young people. After taking into account the situation of youth workers and professionals for the non-formal education over Europe, we realized that there is a lack of competences about how to use the sport as a too for a social change in the local community. Hence, the project born with the following goals:
2.2 Objectives
• To introduce the concept of Education through Sport (ETS).
• To promote sport and physical activity as tools for a sustainable social change.
• To improve the skills of the participants when using the ETS methodology.
• To explore the ETS methodology in terms of practical examples.
• To share best practices with practical examples of using sport to improve the active participation of young people as a way to achieve social change.
• To empower participants to act as multipliers and approach the ETS methodology within their local communities.
3. Number and profiles of participants.
The training course "Sports can be the change" counted with the participation 29 participants, included 2 participants with fewer opportunities. The training involved all members of the partner organizations working with young people and interested in developing their skills for the use of the ETS methodology as an educational tool in general, and to multiply the effect of the project in their local communities. The main target group was young professionals or volunteers, trainers, mentors or coordinators EVS projects and people working in the youth sector work.
4. Description of activities.
The Training Course count on different activities based on the implementation of a physical training based on non-formal education methodology, highly interactive and participatory, and designed on the basis of the participants and their organizations needs. The diversity of the group was considered as a resource for the exchange and transfer of skills.
Moreover, during the course, previous experiences of participants in youth work were used for a higher development of the learning process.
For this reason, during the Training Course, physical and formative activities were held, because the program included sessions to get to know what is the education through sports and how to become a multiplier of the knowledge acquired as well as the time spent to organize activities, the reflection through the evaluation and the self-assessment processes.
The methodology for carrying out the whole project was based on non-formal education and especially on the approach of ETS, aim of the project activities. ETS creates a new dimension of social skill development, since it combines the learning experience with the personal reflection process. For this reasons, we carried out the project through this methodology, because we believed that this methodology was appropriate for achieving the objectives of the project as well as to impact the local communities that will benefit from the project in a very positive way in the near future.
The project had a higher impact on a local level. This impact was possible because of the participation of groups of students belonging to three High Schools of Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona) in different training sessions together with the group of 29 participants of the project.
5. Achieved results and impact.
The project results can be distinguished in two different general levels:
