The traditional learning theory applied so far in our school courses, ie. passive learning with the basic sources of knowledge being source books as well as teachers has proved ineffective as regards:
1) Cognitive concepts
2) Emotional skills (self-confidence and self-esteem)
3) Social skills (socialization)
4) Other critical skills (teamwork, problem solving, project management, analytic-synthetic-critical thinking, creativity and communication).
A learning environment was needed, in which students build and discover knowledge from various sources and the teacher plays the role of advisor. The educational robotics provides such an environment turning learning into fun.
Our first priority was therefore to seek appropriate educational robotics courses to train fellow teachers in this environment. The search resulted in a significant educational robotics conference, ECER (European Conference on Educational Robotics), organized by the Austrian robotics organization PRIA.
Our main goal was to introduce the robotics initially in IT classes where our students have many difficulties in algorithmic expression with conventional programming languages. For this reason we decided that the two participant teachers would be the two IT teachers of our school.
Training materials, ideas, experiences and interaction with teachers from other countries provided both our teachers with the necessary knowledge / skills and confidence to enable them to already implement educational robotics in the classroom. Teachers are expected next school year to act as a multiplier for the other disciplines, with emphasis on physics and mathematics teachers of our school.
