Sign Awareness and Learning the Language – SIGNALL

The SIGNALL project is a transnational language competency and training project that aims to increase awareness of Deaf culture and sign languages amongst organisations, employers and citizens in general. Overall, the project aims to cultivate behavioural change and commitment from a range of organisations with respect to how deaf people are perceived and treated. The project's broad remit will include such initiatives as introducing people to sign language and the identification of 'good practice' where organisations have already accommodated the needs of deaf employees/customers. Project deliverables will include: a multilingual interactive CD-Rom/DVD, for each partner country, with sections on, for example, deaf culture and problems encountered by deaf people; a series of best practice educational case studies in printed form; multilingual pocket-sized information pamphlets; a CD for employers; interview diaries from deaf people on issues that concern them. The project will incorporate research and reviews of existing material about deafness and for deaf people and will use this information in the development of its own project deliverables and identification of 'best practice'. Verification, validation and endorsement of project deliverables will be undertaken by an expert project panel including representatives from each of the partner countries. Liaison with national deaf agencies will take place during the course of the project development. A project website will be used as a source for information, guidelines and links with deaf associations and will contribute to project dissemination along with seminars and specific dissemination events. Publications in leading journals will also disseminate project results.
