Sharing life science infrastructures and skills to benefit the Atlantic area biotechnology sector (ShareBiotech)
Start date: Dec 31, 2009, End date: Mar 29, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

The main objective is to strengthen the biotechnology sector, through the maximisation of the benefits of life science infrastructures and skills for the development of the Atlantic Area, which has notable areas of excellence (notably in marine science, rich and increasing number of SMEs, policy initiatives) but also weaknesses. Achievements: Modern biotechnology involves a different set of enabling technologies that serve all life science domains and that significantly improve the performance and capabilities ofthe users in fields such as human health, animal health and feed, environment and energy, food and nutrition, cosmetics and marine biology. As the AA has strong assets inbiotechnology, transnational cooperation is needed to make it a development pillar. The main objectives of SHAREBIOTEC are to strengthen the biotechnology sector within the AA through the creation of a transnational network to share knowledge between scientificresearch centres and companies, as well as to improve the service offer of the technological core facilities involved in the project. The project aims to provide access to technological core facilities for researchers and companies working in the fields identified above and to offer technological and research collaborativeservices. For that purpose an action plan has been designed, it aims at responding to both academic and industrial technology needs while improving the offer and skills. It also aims toprofessionalize the core facilities' service offer and enhance their specificities. The promotion of interdisciplinarity as well as the exchange of scientific and technological skills, areimplemented through meetings, colloquia, mobility and education plans and the technology transfer. Actions are implemented to establish future cooperation and propose recommendationson equipment or organisations to be set up according to the identified needs. The main concrete results of this project are, among others, the creation of new technology services (spin-off company creation in some cases), a technology source book completedby an on-line search engine to give access to the technologies and skills of the partners and to establish the basis of a transnational organisation integrating research facilities, scienceskills, business skills and technology transfer instruments - the Biotechnology Translational Centre.Strong expectations are placed on SHAREBIOTEC's project results, in the contribution to develop biotechnology, either from the point of view of fostering new research lines, or encouragingthe creation of new technological services. A platform for technology dissemination and a transnational centre of biotechnology create new opportunities in terms of interdisciplinaryprocesses involving scientific research and industry in the AA.
