Sharing life in community
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Sep 1, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Sharing life in community is a challenging project for young people who are looking for a different way of life. In l'Arche people with and without mental disablities live, work and celebrate together in small community-homes and workshops. We welcome two volunteers per year to live this special experience in their life in one of our two l’Arche homes in Gouda, Netherlands. In l’Arche we promote people with and without mental disabilities share life, in order to develop mutual relationships. In doing so, not only the lives of those with a disability improve, as they need loving support and care, but also the lives of the people who care will improve. In our experience people who have obvious disabilities, through their limitations, are able to teach us essential things about life and what really matters. They teach us about human values such as friendship, respect, love and care and help us face our own limitations. We believe that each person is valuable and that each has a special and unique gift to contribute to the community. Beside the professional care that we give to people with disabilities, we create an environment where different qualities, talents and gifts can be shared and developed and where each member has the opportunity to grow into his full potentiality. At global level, the worldwide communities of l’Arche want to contribute to a more human society where every member is valued. This is being done on a small scale, by simply sharing our lives together in small family homes.
