School Museum Internet Learning Education - Vocational Education Training

SMILE stands for Schools Museums Internet Learning Education. The SMILE training course and teaching material have been developed and directed towards teachers throughout Europe since 2002. The method has become a flexible way of addressing issues about integrating culture and heritage with learning and education through digital media. The courses are run through the EU LLP adult and teacher education program and are established in Sweden, Ireland, Turkey and Italy. The method addresses issues of the best use of archives, libraries and museums, cultural heritage in education and training. This project is a transfer of innovation of an educational methodology from the teacher and adult education sector into the VET sector. It is also a transfer of innovation from the established countries into three new countries. The partners have integrated the SMILE methodology and are facilitating the transfer into Austria, Denmark and the U.K. The aim has been to improve the quality and reinforce VET through learning in ALM and cultural heritage. The aim has also been to increase the volume of co-operation between institutions or organizations providing learning opportunities, LEO-OpObj-2.This has been done through the dissemination of an interdisciplinary material and training course. The resulting products are:1. An "How to do" publication on best practice on various methods for using ALM in VET2. An interdisciplinary eLearning hub: educational exercises for VET teachers. 3. Teacher notes translated into Swedish, Danish Spanish, German, French, and Turkish4. An ALM course/curriculum to be run through VET teacher training workshops5. Courses integrated into the partners institutions6. A mentoring system for future VET teachers who wish to apply the SMILE-VET training tools7. Educational material for VET for people with special needs.Impact: The aim is to create educational tools for VET which in the long term will strengthen the quality of VET teaching in Europe. The short term impact has been that a body of professionals educators from different disciplines within VET will gain competence to produce and use interdisciplinary material.
