Start date: Jan 1, 2015, End date: Nov 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Sailing Democracy 2015 was a 10 days long youth exchange which took place on the schooner Fylla, from July 3-12, 2015 in Denmark. The participants were 32 people from France, Slovakia and Denmark between 14-23 years old plus leaders. Before mustering the ship, all participants slept the first two days in Danish families, and met during the day doing activities. Last night on the exchange everybody stay together in a common venue in Svendborg. The aim of the project was to strengthen young people´s European identity and to promote European citizenship and intercultural learning. The project took the participants mutual intercultural reflection on the theme of democracy and peace education under very unusual circumstances. All participants had to cooperate in a very small international society on the ship and were challenged on how to cope with every day life´s actions such as cooking and cleaning, but also challenged on how to run and sailed the ship. We went through storm and gale, which also gave some new challenges. Everybody had huge responsibility and had to be trusted, especially during the two hours nightshift starting at 10 pm. Two participants were on shift for two hours at the time, and had to secure that everything was safe on board during the night. The 6 o´clock morning shift had to bake bread and prepare breakfast for the rest. The situation on the ship offered participants new knowledge and experience, which can form the basis of social and intercultural reflection, but also enhance employability in the future. All discussion about democracy and peace education were related to every day reality on the ship and to life in general.
