SAIL4youth
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Jan 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

In 2015 STA Latvia and its partners from Lithuania and Estonia implemented an experimental training SAIL4entrepreneurSHIP where they tested the combination of non-formal, entrepreneurship education and practical sailing. Many non-formal and business education methods were learned, tested and adjusted for challenging and attractive "sea outdoor" conditions, many insights about the parallels and metaphors of sailing and entrepreneurship were discovered and sailing as a tool for entrepreneurship competence building was tested. In 2016 two sail training yachts with 2 captains, 2 trainers and 20 youth workers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Portugal, Croatia and the Netherlands will sail in the Baltic sea (10 - 19 June, 2016) to gain knowledge and skills on sailing, non-formal, adventures, outdoor and experiential education and will learn how to organize educational youth projects involving sailing activities. As the outcome they will collect their lessons learned creating guidelines for sailing youth workers on how to organize such projects and will disseminate in the community of trainers and sailors. With this training STA Latvia and its partners would like to continue the work on developing the sailing as a method in youth work on a wider perspective, so more youth workers and sailors who work with youth could be trained for the implementation of sailing youth projects in future. This time the team widers their horizon both on expanding their network and involving more partner organizations and also on discovering other fields where and how the sailing as a method in youth work can be used (not only on entrepreneurship education). There is still an undiscovered and unused potential of sailing as an effective tool in youth work, especially for the young people who prefer to learn doing practical things and are less attracted by academic learning. Also, nowadays youth need more practical and playful learning methods that are full of emotional experience and that can also be individualized and with the personal approach. Young generation nowadays also lacks physical outdoor experience and reunion with nature, they lack face-to-face communication skills, self-discipline, self-initiative and entrepreneurship skills, ability to take decisions independently and to be responsible for them, also ability to work in a team and take risks, do practical work with their hands for the community. But, according to 8 life-long-learning competence model, all of these competences are very valuable and needed to develop oneself and to be successful entering labor market and society in general. The educational concept that the team will develop in this training, responds to these needs of young people. In additional, thanks to this experience, some youth could probably discover the sea as their future profession which is undeservedly forgotten field in some coast municipalities in Europe. The objectives of the training are: => to learn how to combine practical sailing experience with non-formal education, experiential and adventures education and use it in youth work; => to gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to sail safely in a team and support others aboard;=> to learn how to design and implement both the learning program and logistics for youth projects with sailing activities;=> to learn, adjust and create non-formal education methods for youth sailing projects;=> to discover sailing as personal development tool for themselves and working with youth; => to map sailing opportunities for youth in partner countries; => to collect the existing experiences and develop the guidelines for youth workers, leaders and sailors on how to organize local and international sailing youth projects. The project will also train participants’ flexibility and project management skills and will encourage future collaboration for youth sailing projects in Europe. The training will focus on the practical implementation aspects on youth sailing projects mapping the youth sailing opportunities in partner countries, learning logistics for such projects and developing guidelines for sailing youth project implementation. The partner organizations of the project are: Sail Trainin Association Latvia, Sport Club Ostmarina (Lithuania), Olde Vechte (the Netherlands), Simuna Naisteklubi (Estonia), Yacht Club of Poland Warsaw (Poland), Fundação Bracara Augusta (Portugal), Outward Bound (Croatia).
