Safety Net
Start date: Feb 1, 2012,

Children and young people are almost expert users of online technologies. However, this does not mean they all have the maturity to identify the potential risks they may be exposed to, let alone their possible consequences. This project compared toothbrushes with Internet passwords. The idea behind the toothbrush is that, it is not transferable and it must be frequently changed and the same applies with the passwords. This conveyed the important message that passwords are personal information and should never be shared with anyone and should be changed from time to time to reduce the risks it involves. A small scale campaign involving 11 young leaders has been implemented mainly in the locality of San Gwann (Malta) and Konnevesi (Finland) and its vicinities. The project consisted of the designing and implementation of information session and activities to young people and the general public. This project has been implemented over a period of 10 months; between February and November 2012. It involved sessions to the young leaders, focus groups and questionnaires to gather data, setting up of a facebook page, the design and printing of a leaflet, the distribution of such leaflet and the setting up of the website. Both partners shared their experience via Skype on a weekly basis to ensure sharing of knowledge and experience. Some of the participants had to drop from this project due to personal reasons. Soraya Caruana had to drop and Aurelio Caruana was replaced by James Borg Cumbo. Virpi Sauro, Roosa nieminen, Sauli Korhonen and Johanna Heikennen were replaced by Henna Siekkinen, Laura Lampinen and Anna-Katariina Koukka. In the table of activities attached with the application, it has been indicated that the website would be set-up prior to the final evaluation, however, we felt the need that first the evaluation should take place and then set-up the wesbite. This has been decided because we saw that it is important that the website focused not only on the life-cycle of the project but also highlights the most important aspects of internet safety. Such aspects could only be identified after the main activity was carried out and its outcomes evaluated.
