SAFEGUARD, VALORISATION AND MANAGEMENT QUALITY. USE OF THE MANAGEMENT MODELS FOR THE ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES AND URBAN CONTEXTS (ARCHEOMEDSITES)

Project in brief The management of archaeological sites and urban areas in the southern and northern countries of the Mediterranean area still need to be developed through the implementation of good practices focusing on sustainability and ensuring the valorisation of the specific historical and cultural heritage as well as its protection and conservation. In this framework, the ARCHEOMEDSITES project aims to increase the strategic planning capacities of central and local institutions in the governance and management of selected archeological and historical sites through the exchange of knowhow and good practices. The activities will take place in Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia: mutual experiences, complementarities and common needs will be benchmarked and shared at the benefit of these countries’ heritage, which will be enhanced thanks to the adoption of concrete management and maintenance plans. The target areas will thus become potential elements for an historical Mediterranean identity respecting the environment, enhancing local cultures and having a direct positive impact on the local economies competitiveness. Specific objective To develop and implement governance processes for the safeguard, conservation and valorisation of archaeological sites through: • Management plans • Guidelines for the safeguard, maintenance and valorisation • Training initiatives and actions for a shared management framework Expected Results: • At least 90% of officials and staff part of the central and local institutions of the target areas trained on the new management methodologies of archaeological sites • At least 6 management plans approved and adopted and at least 30% of the new methodologies for the conservation of archaeological sites constantly used by staff of the target sites • 6000 people from the civil society of the 3 countries made more aware and active on safeguard, valorisation of cultural and natural heritage and on sustainable development • Touristic flows of the target sites increased of 10%
