PROJECT
FINISHED
Rock by the River(Rock ob Sotli / Rock na Sutli)Bistrica ob Sotli Youth Association (Slovenia, acronym MDBS) is organizing concerts of contemporary music genres for over 15 years. One might say the same thing about the other partner of the transnational youth initiative Rock by the River - Hum na Sutli Youth Association (Croatia; acronym HUM) - with the exception of them being active for a somewhat shorter period of time. But a closer look reveals that the events of the associations differ greatly. While the MDBS specializes in small club events, members of HUM organize a large-format event: a Hoomstock festival. This diversity is an opportunity, as the MDBS wishes to increase visibility of their larger BoSorok festival, while HUM members wish to test local interest for smaller events that might enrich the cultural offer in their town. Therefore, it is one of the main purposes of the project for each organization to assist the other in carrying out events they have more experience in. Another focal point is the fact that both villages have a long tradition of creating modern (mostly rock) music. Some groups still exist, but many of them have dissolved. We wish to store testimonies about the rock scene in both settlements before it’s too late. The historical study - one of the main results of the project - will be conducted by the young participants in their home towns (5 on each side). Young people who are interested in contemporary music or create music themselves will be common members of the research groups. Members of rock bands from both villages will have one more pleasant task: they will be musical guests at events in partner towns - groups from Bistrica ob Sotli will perform in Hum na Sutli and vice versa. Another important result of the Rock by the River project will be a short documentary video. Also this result will be produced by young participants. Its purpose is to present the current state of rock scene and contemporary-music venues in Bistrica ob Sotli and Hum na Sutli in a innovative way. These activities, combined with a workshop on marketing of cultural events will lead to developing a vision for contemporary music offer in both villages. During the project young people, including young people with fewer opportunities, will gain competencies in cultural contents management, video production, research activities and others and thus facilitate easier entry into the labor market. Provided long-term effects of the Rock on the River project are: an increase in the visibility of both music scenes, the greater fluidity of ideas, content and performers across the border, more effective program design and contents enrichment for both associations, as well as increased support from both local communities.
