ROBOT - rescue, offer help, be a friend, open doors, take on Europe
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

ROBOT- rescue, offer help, be a friend, open doors, take on Europe Our project will concentrate on robotic solutions of two real-world situations: 1. Help for European senior citizens or persons with handicap in daily-life situations 2. Help for victims of natural and environmental disasters occurring in Europe Our students will work in teams to program and construct a vehicle by means of Lego Mindstorm, which can drive autonomously while fulfilling special tasks. They will first develop modular units which can be used for different tasks, e.g. one vehicle unit follows a line, another unit is capable of transporting heavy loads over obstacles, another one can distinguish colours, etc. During four transnational meetings students will compete in Robot tournaments in which they present their modular units in a contest. The best unit will win and be further developed. This modular approach ensures that a suitable vehicle for a specific task will be designed. It can also form the basis for succeeding (sub)projects and more modules for similar problems can be generated. A European prototype consisting of all the winning elements as a possible final product is planned to be developed and presented in the final meeting. To begin with, one task could for example be: Shopping for elderly people should be facilitated. One (of many) problem-solving task(s) would be: The vehicle should autonomously follow a predetermined way and self-reliantly avoid obstacles. An expected solution would be: Student teams design, shape and construct an appropriate modular robotic unit by means of Lego Mindstorm and present it with a short justification of the reasons why they built it that way. This unit will then be tested in a contest. They explain their programming principles to the other students and decide on the best solution. The criteria for the best units will be agreed on by all participants. We will first start with national teams and later on form multinational teams to increase the level of difficulty and enhance the requirements of successful teamwork and project management. The winner unit will be documented and made available to the other contestants by being published on the project website and on etwinning. Awareness of specific conditions in different European countries in daily-life situations as well as in emergencies caused by natural disasters while working together on common technological solutions will increase students’ national identities, their feeling of European citizenship and their digital competence. They will be motivated to use their mathematical strategies and logical thinking in writing and applying appropriate programs, they will improve their language skills by presenting and explaining their robotic solutions to others, they will develop their programming skills, they will realize the significance of gamification and they will encourage a bigger audience to discuss the functionality and reliability of robots. Subjects like natural sciences, especially physics and mathematics, will be involved in the project by dealing with topics corresponding to the two aspects of help mentioned above. Social and political studies as well as language classes will contribute by discussing relevant topics of e.g. demographic change, discrimination, civil courage etc and publishing their results. Graphic design classes will help with the documentation and preparation of the project dissemination.
