Reinventing Subtitling for Language Learning in Vocational Education
Juan, a 18 years old carer produced during his apprenticeship a short video, explaining how he put a patient back-friendly into another bed. He loaded up the video file onto the platform draufhaber.tv and prepared English subtitles for the video in his class. In Italy, apprentices in the care sector used Juan's video in order to prepare Italian subtitles for it in their english-class. Similar videos were produced by German apprentices in the geriatric care. Here apprentices, who may had a migration background, subtitled their videos with the language of their family's country of origin. By subtitling the video, the fluency of the apprentices was effectively encouraged for the learning within the work process. The video production itself encouraged the professional identification and supported the development of media skills.Knowledges of a foreign language and mobility are two sides of the same coin. Mobility is a "basis qualification " for european employees (Wordelmann 2009). The project considered itself as a preparatory measure for rise of mobility. For that reason the already in Germany established video platform draufhaber.tv was translated into the central European languages (EN, FR, FIN, ES, RO, TK, RUS) by the proposed project pool. The platform was extended by the subtitling function within the frame of ReSoLVE. This concept has already been proved in Germany and the didactic documents were translated and contextualized within the target countries. The care sector was especially eligible for this project as the migration background of the employees as well as of the clients was becoming more important. The establishment of a multilingual video platform had the target to make the medium video available Europe-wide and to spread the professional or practice-oriented contents produced by young people. Draufhaber.tv created a European web-based pool and space for lifelong learning. This pool could be used by youngsters all over Europe to contact each other before starting a first apprenticeship with expert foreign language vocabulary.With this platform the blind spot of the European language and politics was approached: Bilingual migrants used their familial language skills as a resource by contributing subtitles and they have got the incentive (appeal) to extend these to expert areas. The projekt pool consisted of partners from DE, FI, ES, IT and RO.DE as exporting country was the platfom coordinator. RO was one of the few countries in Europe, which has 2 foreign languages in its area of education. All countries were linked very close within migration networks.
