As the film industry has almost completely abandoned celluloid for digital technology, artists have gained access to masses of discarded equipment that would have previously been beyond reach. This allows brand new possibilities to explore the mechanics and materiality of film, its incredible micro-granular world , its living emulsion, its play of light and shadow, and the making of cinema in ways previously undreamed.The core partners of the RE MI project - Mire, WORM.Filmwerkplaats and LaborBerlin - will share, preserve and develop their unique knowledge of film and reinforce the international network of independent laboratories in Europe and its connections further afield.RE MI has 4 main thematic focuses:RE-EXPLORING UNEXPLORED PATHSUpdate and develop 'primitive' photochemical processes through a research seminar and symposium on Handmade Emulsion and Primitive ColourRE-ACTIVATING THE NETWORKOrganizing an International Film Labs Meeting, 4 workshop tours and 4 meetings between the core RE MI partnersRE-ACTIVATING THE FILM AUDIENCERevealing the current artistic vitality of film, organizing regular public screenings, a Meeting the Film Labs event parallel to the International Film Labs Meeting and the Film In the Present Tense symposiumRE-ENGINEERING THE INDUSTRYPreserving industrial heritage for artistic development, organizing Masterclasses, Workshops and Residencies, with a philosophy of transmission between former film industry technicians, experienced film artists, students and young filmmakersThe following aims will be achieved: progress in photochemical research, expansion of the Film Lab Network, further development of contemporary film art's audience, enhancement of a new generation of filmmakers' skills and preservation of industrial heritage.During the 2 years project, online technical documentation will be produced, films reinvesting new acquired skills made and a booklet gathering contributions from RE MI guests published.
