Reaching out to the inside!
Start date: Jun 17, 2014, End date: Dec 16, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project was created in order to cover the needs of the Day Care centre members (children and teenagers with autism and facilitate their participation in alternative activities and treatment programmes. The project is based on the principals of non formal learning and the interaction between the volunteers and the children. While it does not replace other therapeutic methods, it contributes very much to the socialization of the child, the improvement of his/her physical and psychological status as well as of his/her education. The volunteers play one of the most important roles in this program, since they constitute the conjunctive ring between the child, the special instructor and the society in general and by being foreigner volunteers they also add elements of their culture therefore we have an exchange of cultural elements between the European countries. They are the assistants and they have active role in the combination of activities of formal and non formal learning which are being used by the specialised instructors for the education of child. The program takes place in the facilities of the Day Care centre. Methods that are used are methods of observation, educational games, education through sports and interaction (peer education). The duration of this EVS project is 12 months and it will be implemented in Kalamata, Greece. The sending organisation, sharing the same objectives is developing this Activity in close cooperation with all parts involved. The volunteer will work along with other local volunteers and children’s parents according to the activity’s schedule. Those people are friendly and enthusiastic in general, and they love to work with an international volunteer. They will transfer to him their hospitality and the friendly atmosphere of their culture. As the volunteer will have the chance to also participate in the different activities and workshops in the Youth Centre of Kalamata, as well as in other traditional cultural activities of the local society, he will have the opportunity to absorb the positive parts of the Greek culture. He will also meet other international volunteers participating in other projects in Kalamata. This will offer him the opportunity to be aware of other cultures from different programme countries. Through the activity, the volunteer will have the opportunity to experience different ways of life, work and culture, strong characteristics of the Greek mentality. Also, one of the main objectives of the project is the prevention of prejudices, racism and exclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, minorities, excluded youth, refugees etc People with autism, mental disabilities, physical disabilities and other disabilities are facing exclusion in their everyday life in Greece. This project is trying to help people to develop their sense of tolerance and understanding of diversity and even more to adopt the creativity, enthusiasm and ideas of people with fewer opportunities. The results of this project will be distributed among various media channels, such as websites and newspapers both locally and internationally. We intend to have the local media present during the activities of the project (presentation of each activity and exhibit the results). These usually include both television and press. It is important to have media exposure for all NGOs, seminars and exchanges. During the EVS project we will be talking about how the Day Care centre and NGOs in general can approach the media. Through the learning-by doing methods, we will promote that volunteers engage in media promotion when they return to their countries; this way, they will be well prepared to use media channels in future projects. Through this, we will emphasise on promoting projects that are similar to ours internationally as well as locally. The tools / workshops/ results created will be put up on the website and any possible media. This is to ensure that our target audience – the general public and young people – is reached. Information about the project, our orgainsation and its projects will be given in a clear and attractive way so that people will find it a lot easier to contact us regarding information or anything they need. They will also be encouraged to start similar projects of their own. Media channels will include the internet, television, newspapers and magazines.
