PROTECTING THE NESTING HABITATS FOR LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES IN GREECE

The project is in the context of European Voluntary Service of ERASMUS+, involving two volunteers and is expected to have a duration of about 12 months. Project activities are centered at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center and at Rethymno project which is one of the major important nesting beaches for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. The volunteer in Rethymno will be involved in all the project activities, which include collection of scientific data, active management of sea turtle nests as well as environmental education and public awareness. ARCHELON’s Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, where injured or sick sea turtles are sent from all over Greece for treatment and rehabilitation. There will be placed one EVS volunteer. The volunteer will be involved in all the project activities, which include applying the daily treatment of the animals (medication, feeding, etc, supporting the National Stranding Network, providing information to the public and helping to keep scientific data on the relevant databases.Main project objectives include (1) providing young people with the opportunity to work directly for the conservation of a protected marine species, (2) promoting the importance of protecting the marine and coastal environment, and (3) acquiring knowledge that can make young people adopt a friendlier attitude towards the environment, which is something that can be used no matter where they are in the world. Participants are expected to gain experience on the conservation of protected species and habitats, as per the EU’s Habitats directive (92/43/EEC).
